Great Thriller, Highly RecommendedSep 15, 2010
By Gwen Dreyfuss This was my first read from this author, and I am pretty well hooked. It's a complex spy thriller with lots of fast-paced twists and turns. It begins on a military base with a soldier barely out of training camp directed to drive a vehicle loaded with Stinger missiles off base in the middle of the night. Once he gets to his location, he's assassinated by one of the coolest villains I have ever read in suspense thrillers - this guy is a killing machine who is employed by a private security firm that is a little like an evil version, or I should say a MORE evil version, of Blackwater. I won't spoil what happens next but we don't realize what the Stingers are for until a few chapters later, and it's one of the best political assassination sequences I have ever read.
One warning: Tyree is not afraid to kill off major characters. This creates lots of tension, which is good, but there is one good one that I am bummed about about not coming back in the series. I am only assuming more books are planned - we get closure in the second to last chapter, and the very last one reads like an epilogue that is gearing up for a second book. Let's hope!

Reads like a movie!Sep 21, 2010
By Haley P. I spent a year after college working on Capitol Hill, and I have always been interested in books dealing with the intelligence community and conspiracy theories. This is the ultimate DC conspiracy story. Line of Succession is divided into short, extremely vivid chapters that are equal parts suspense and action.
In Line of Succession, an unpopular President begins to suspect that a private security contractor, Ulysses, may be buying
unauthorized weaponry from the Pentagon and selling it to America's enemies. The administration pulls counterterrorism agent Blake Carver out of the CIA to conduct a covert investigation. Just as he assembles a crack team, a wave of unprecidented coordinated assasinations wipe out much of the executive and administrative branches of government. There's a highly original subplot involving Iranian desalination technology that is interesting, but to me it's secondary to the main story, which has Blake Carver and team as both the hunters as well as the hunted. I really felt like I was watching a movie at times, and to me that is good writing.

This book kept me up all night!Sep 05, 2010
By Bella GW I took a chance on this book and have a smile on my face to show for it (as well as very red eyes since I couldn't
put it down last night!).
People who liked the first three seasons of the TV series "24" and also the movie "Syriana" will probably be into Line of Succession (government conspiracies are strong themes here). But at the same time there are a lot of new ideas. It's more sophisticated than your typical Vince Flynn thriller, but with just as much action. Enjoy!

great debut thriller ala Vince FlynnFeb 25, 2011
By Jarratt Bryan I really enjoyed "Line of Succession." Interestingly, while the story is supposed to be about "water wars," it focuses very little on that. The crux of the book deals with an outsourced security company called Ulysses who, with the blessing and leadership of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, attempts a military coup against the US. However, they're pinning much of the action against the US on a radical Islamic terrorist cell. Our hero, CIA Special Agent Blake Carver, must stop the coup from coming to fruition.
While there are some political aspects to the novel that can lean a bit to the Left (Ulysses' semblance to Blackwater; the JCS being "Republican," etc.), I don't think it's really making any statements one way or the other. Carver is not afraid to use "any means necessary" to get results; the intelligence community is not a bumbling entity; and I think the military (other than the evil leaders) tend to be portrayed in a positive light.
This is a fast paced novel that seems to have an insider's touch ala Vince Flynn novels. At less than $4 for the Kindle version, you can't go wrong!

Edge of Your Seat BookJan 12, 2011
By Michael D In an era where political corruption and corporate greed constantly dominant the the headlines, Line of Succession paints an America that isn't far from reality and frighteningly touches on the possibilities from a dysfunctional world. Tyree keeps you on the edge of your seat with unexpected twist and turns, and keeps you engaged with characters that you either love or hate. At the end, Line of Succession will leave you wanting more. I'm looking forward to next adventure with Carver and Nico.
